What does it mean to be French? As [French-Canadian] Avril Lavigne proclaimed, “It’s complicated”. Les Blues’ current World Cup squad. Foreigners’ meme-ish understanding of L'Hexagone. The Tour almost always starts beyond France’s borders these days and this time around, it gets underway in its neighbor’s sandbox, the whimsical metropolis of Barcelona. 

The Tour, however, inevitably ends up being undeniably French— straddling caricature and the stuff of legends, in essence, quite French. Finishing on the Champs-Élysées leaves no doubt where all this ends, and, indeed, originally began. Here are my musings about the goings-on from Barcelona to Paris, including each stage the 112th edition of the Tour de France.
